A big, juicy BLT is one of my favourite things about summer. I will enjoy the BLT taste in salad until summer tomatoes arrive. This BLT Pasta Salad is a great way to enjoy the creamy, tomatoey balcony flavors I love in a cool and refreshing pasta salad. It's also great for summer potlucks, BBQs and picnics. If you haven't yet tried this classic pasta salad for summer, add it to your list.

What is in BLT Pasta salad?

Let's begin with the BLT, in case you haven't had it before. "BLT" stands for "bacon lettuce tomato". BLT sandwiches are made with crispy bacon, lettuce and tomatoes sliced between two pieces of bread. Mayonnaise is then spread on top. It's perfect and simple.

We keep the basic flavors of BLT Pasta Salad the same but add a few extras. I don't think lettuce will hold up well to pasta salad. I use fresh spinach (which I find has a better texture and color for pasta salad). We add some ranch dressing to the mayo dressing for more flavor. Lemon juice is also added as a zinger. Then, to finish off the taste and texture of the dish, I added some diced red onions. The salad is still delicious and super easy to make!

Use the right pasta

This recipe can be made with any short pasta shape, such as rotini (small shells), orecchiette (cavatappi), or farfalle. I chose bowtie for this recipe because I thought it was a cute shape!

How long does it last?

If you are serving this BLT Pasta Salad to guests, you will want to prepare it on the same day. The salad was delicious the first day but became a bit dry the second day. For best results, prepare this salad on the day you intend to serve it. Also, try to finish off any leftovers within one day.

  • 8 oz. bacon $2.30
  • 3/4 cup mayonnaise $0.92
  • 1/4 cup ranch dressing $0.30
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice $0.12
  • 1/2 tsp salt $0.02
  • 1/4 tsp freshly cracked pepper $0.02
  • 12 oz. bowtie pasta* $1.25
  • 1 pint grape tomatoes $1.89
  • 1/4 red onion $0.11
  • 2 cups fresh spinach (packed) $0.46

Instructions

  • In a large skillet, cook the bacon over medium heat for about 10 minutes or until it is crispy and brown. Then, transfer the bacon to a plate lined with paper towels to cool and drain. Once the bacon has cooled, you can chop it or crumble it into smaller pieces.
  • As the bacon cooks, prepare the dressing. Mix the ranch dressing, mayonnaise, lemon juice, and salt and pepper. Set aside the dressing.
  • Bring a large pot with salted water up to a rolling boil. Add the pasta to the boiling water and cook for 7-8 minutes. Drain the pasta, rinse with cool water briefly to cool it, and then drain it very well.
  • Prepare the vegetables while the pasta is cooking. Cut the grape tomatoes into half, dice the red onions finely, and chop the spinach roughly.
  • Add the pasta, spinach, tomatoes and onions to a large mixing bowl. Stir all ingredients together until they are evenly coated with dressing. Stir the pasta once again and serve.

How to make BLT Pasta Salad: Step by step photos

Start by cooking 8oz. In a skillet, cook the bacon over medium heat for about 8oz. Drain the bacon on a plate lined with paper towels after removing it from the pan. Once the bacon has cooled, you can chop it or crumble it into smaller pieces.

Make the salad dressing while the bacon cooks. Mix 3/4 cup mayonnaise with 1/4 cup ranch dressing. Add 2 Tbsp of lemon juice and 1/2 tsp each of salt and freshly cracked pepper. Set aside the dressing.

Add one tablespoon of salt to the water in a large pot and bring to a rolling boil on high heat. Add 12oz. of water once it has boiled. Continue to boil the bowtie noodles until they are tender (7-8 minutes). Drain the pasta using a colander. Rinse it with ice water to cool it down, and then drain it well.

While the pasta is boiling and draining, cut one pint of grape tomato in half. Finely dice 1/4 of an onion (about a 1/3 cup diced).

Chop 2 cups of spinach roughly into bite-sized pieces.

Add the spinach, tomatoes and onions to the large bowl once the pasta has cooled.

Stir everything until it is coated with the dressing and evenly mixed. Allow the salad to sit for 10 minutes so that the flavors can blend. Then give it a final stir before serving.
